All In the Eyes: The Wire Season 2, Episode 12 with Commentary

I really enjoy listening to episode commentaries on shows that I enjoy as they often provide a lot of details about the production and post-production that wouldn’t be known otherwise. This commentary emphasized the importance of what people are saying with their eyes throughout the episode. There’s a lot that goes unsaid or is expressed only through the face, which is really interesting and speaks to the strength of the actors.

They also talked about many of the ways that this show tries to not be like other shows. In moments that could have been very emotionally intense or melodramatic, were kept simple and that simplicity really made for something much more moving. It was also mentioned how music is never used in the show to manipulate the emotions of the audience during a scene. That’s a very unique style choice, as music is so vital to building up various emotions that without it, you have to rely on the acting, camera angles, and the dialogue. This really shows how strong all of those elements are in this series, because music is never needed to set the emotion of a scene.

This commentary, if nothing else, reinforced how well done and well thought-through this show is and this narrative is. Everything matters.
