The noir experiment

Today begins our latest experiment in digital storytelling, Noir106. It’s ds106 with a noir twist, but it’s more than that too. We’re running three sections as one big group. It will be fascinating to see what kind of connections, collaborations and inspirations come out of that. We’re hoping the size of the group will push everybody’s game to new heights.

The noir theme came in part from our interest in revisiting the Hardboiled course. Investigating the style of noir within the context of digital storytelling opens up creative possibilities. It gives the class a focus for creative output as we look at the techniques that go into telling noir tales. And while noir is tied to cinema, it bleeds over into other media – photography, radio/audio, literature… I found this playlist on 8tracks.com that explores noir music. That John Lee Hooker/Miles Davis combination was a stroke of genius:

Film Noir from Harvestblastsound on 8tracks Radio.

We’ve even got a bit of noir-ish poetry, Joseph Moncure March’s The Wild Party, on tap. Didn’t have the heart to inflict The Wasteland on the class. I wonder if we could work the Poetry Noir challenge into what we’re doing? So many diferent ways to go…
