Interesting to Some But Not To Me – Vignelli

I’ll be honest I wasn’t the biggest fan of this reading. I tend to not enjoy readings that are about something I am not truly interested in. Design is not my forte nor my inspiration. I try at times to make good designs but it’s just not for me. I would have to say the most design I really ever do is when I am doing a house project that includes power tools and saw dust. I guess some people may think about interior designing but I leave that more for the magazines, I just like to build and fix the things. Although I wasn’t the big fan of the reading I still completed it and got somethings out of it, but I am not going to lie it was hard to focus on it.

Semantics, the meaning behind the design or the reason for the design. I think semantics is an interesting topic because the designer may have one thought in mind as to what they want the meaning to be but a viewer may think of it differently. I think of museums when reading this. I remember in elementary school having to go to art museums and looking at works of art that I just thought…. ummm yea ok. Like I said design is not my thing and definitely not art. I have full respect for artists but sometimes I just don’t understand abstract pieces having meaning or at least i just don’t interpret it that way. Don’t get me wrong, I know artists are extremely talented and are really good at what they do but it is just not my cup of tea.

Timelessness was one that had me somewhat interested. I look for things that are shot simple to the point and get the job done. I do not like doing something and it not complete the job. I don’t like wasting time and I honestly do not have too much time to waste. I know it is going to keep getting worse as I get older. Vignelli described timelessness by saying we want a design that lasts and responds to what the people want and need. I think that is a great point. There are so many business that will put millions of dollars into a new idea or prototype and in the end it be a waste. Design is a major part of nearly every business and timelessness is a key factor.

I am not degrading any of Vignelli’s work. He is a brilliant man and his writing definitely means a lot to other people just not me. It didn’t intrigue me which did not help with me understand all of Vignelli’s points.
