Digital Identity Analysis

I find difficulty in managing multiple social media accounts, but there are some accounts that I use frequently. Although I have a Facebook account, I mainly use its “Newsfeed” feature to see what friends are up to, and what their thoughts are. I’m more of a lurker on Facebook as I do not post statuses often, but I do post pictures sometimes. I used to connect to Pinterest often as I enjoyed having multiple boards where I could organize (or “pin”) cool information and ideas encountered on the website. I’m not as active on Pinterest as I used to be. Both my Facebook and Pinterest account are under my own name. Because of this, I try not to share too much on Facebook. I feel uncomfortable sharing personal information and things going on in my life with people who I’m not very acquainted with, but on Pinterest I feel like it’s safer to express your ideas and creativity.

The account I use most often is my Instagram account. On Instagram I like to post pictures of funny things, food, family, friends, nature, and selfies (of course), but I also comment on my friends’ posts. Like Twitter, you follow other users whose photos show up in your feed as posted. I use Instagram under a screen name and my own name, mainly because sometimes I connect the photos I post on Instagram to my Facebook account.

Though I only update it as needed, I still like to check on what is going on with my LinkedIn account. After realizing that many employers use LinkedIn and that it provides great opportunities for networking, I decided to regularly check and update my account. For me, LinkedIn is a very formal digital identity. By this I mean that what you post and how you display yourself is very important, especially since your account is public to professionals.

My Google results when searching my name are pretty safe (phew!). Luckily, no embarrassing old MySpace accounts or photos show up. Below is a screenshot of my results.

I’m really glad that the top results show my Dean’s List honors at UMW, as well as the honors and scholarships I received in high school. I feel like these results imply that I’m an outstanding student, a hard worker, and professional.
