Goodnight, Sobotka.

Ah, episode 12 of season 2 was rough. It was hard to see another season and another case come to an end. I first watched the episode without the commentary. I mean, that only makes sense, right? Overall, the episode was great just like last season. A lot of things are left unsaid and ties aren’t necessarily closed. But, you already know that because you’ve seen the episode, right? Yeah.. So, let me discuss the commentary episode because that’s a little more important!

Season 2 Episode 12 With Commentary

After watching the episode with commentary, i was enlightened with so many cool points and features. Instead of going through all the comments and how i reacted, i picked out the most important and interesting comments. The first thing i liked was how they mentioned the water. The show starts off with water and revolves around it. I mean, they’re called docks for a reason! I didn’t realize that it was their goal to start off the episode with water but damn, was it clever. To start the last episode the same way you started the first one, great. What was surprising was how quiet everything was. I mean, Frank is being pulled out of the water. You don’t really hear much and everything is all serene, like something bad is going to happen, which obviously will. Like they mentioned in the commentary, that was the point. The sensitive town really did hone in on Frank. He was the guy behind everything in the docks so it only makes sense that his death is THAT important. What i also liked about this scene was how they told Nicky’s character to  hold back on the melodramatic reactions to Frank’s death. You don’t see him screaming or running to Frank. He just stares. Yeah, his mouth is open but still. That was smart, i think because in a way, he already knew it was bound to happen. No one ever comes clean from doing dirty work. Shifting from Frank’s death to the rest of the show, i loved how they mentioned that the show feels/films more like a movie rather than a TV show. This is so true! Every episode feels like a movie. I feel like that because the way to film. They mentioned how there are more wide shots rather than close ups. I compared it to SVU and i saw the difference. The next thing i noted with the commentary was when they brought Nicky in. While they get his inside scoop, you see the Sobotka picture in the background. I knew this was on purpose but i didn’t really pay attention to how they focused in and out of it. I thought that was a great technique. Although he’s dead, he was still the head of everything so you can’t just let him leave you mind. One of the last comments i deemed worthy was about Serge. I’m not trying to stereotype him but come on, i thought he wasn’t American! His accent was so good! Well, like they mention, he has a heavy southern american accent. What the hell! That was a cool little touch to the ending of the episode. Well, more like a fun fact. Finally, i liked how they closed off the episode. They mentioned how in real cases, there are no happy endings. The victims are still dead and nothing will bring them back. That’s really important to keep in mind when watching. You can’t be disappointed in a detective show. The dead remain dead. Also, there will always be loose ends. I mean, look at THE Greek. He gets away and will always be free. But, in the act, they caught everyone else. So like they commented, there are trade offs. For letting the Greek go, they solved the 14 Jane Doe’s and almost everyone was found guilty who needed to be. Overall, this commentary was great. There are so many aspects of the show the viewer doesn’t catch. I think we should do this every week to better understand the show. Yay!
