Mash-Up, Smash-Up

Whoa.. That is how i described this assignment. Whoa….. It’s a good “whoa” by the way. I would just like to lower all expectations before i go into detail about this assignment. With my previous Audio Assignment, which was reversing a song, here, I did a major tutorial, step by step. I would like to do something similar with this assignment, but i really just followed this tutorial. He shows you everything needed to mash-up songs. Instead of a tutorial, I want to just go over my emotions/problems i had with this assignment. So here we go!

Choosing A Band:

For me, this was the hardest part of the assignment, which may or may not be a good thing. As you can tell in the bio page of my blog, music is my thing. My Itune’s library is filled with pure gold, and i mean it. So which artist should i choose to show everyone? I could go safe and pick an indie pop group that maybe some of you guys have heard of, but that would like i said, be safe. If i have your full attention, i’m going bold. I wanted something pop but also old and maybe even familiar. Boom. The first band that came to mind was The Smiths. They’re 80s legends. Don’t feel weird if you’ve never heard of them. I didn’t know they existed until roughly 6 years. Now that i had that over with, which songs?

THE Songs:

Mmmm… You always have to be careful as to which songs you choose when introducing a band to someone. You need to pick their greatest hit so they will automatically like them. Once you’ve got them with that hit, you can venture off into hidden songs or unpopular songs that they can grow to like. I take this music thing real serious, if you haven’t noticed. The first song that i instantly loved by The Smiths was “This Charming Man”. The opening guitar hook really grabbed my attention. It’s fast-paced, catchy, and just great. Johnny Marr (lead guitarist) is a freaking magician. After that song, i just went with their “classics”, however you decide to interpret that. The second song is “Bigmouth Strikes Again”, then “How Soon Is Now?”, then “William, It Was Really Nothing” and finally, i closed it with one of my favorites “Panic.”

Parts Of The Songs:

Ha, you thought i was done. I couldn’t just pick any random part of the song to put in the mash-up. This was simple for me. I mostly chose the chorus or my favorite part. I mean, the chorus is where it’s at yo, right? I wasn’t going to pick the begging (except for “Panic”) or the end. I was contemplating on fading out/in the songs when mashing them up but i wanted it to be one steady song. Fading out/in a song is just kinda making a playlist, in my eyes. Go big or go home, yeah?

Finally = Done

At this point, i’m feelings relieved. I’ve picked the best band, the best songs, and the best parts. Overall, i really didn’t run into any problems thanks to that video tutorial. Of course when uploading it to soundcloud, it took a little bit since the file is 5 minutes long. I decided to use a picture of The Smiths as the file picture on soundcloud. I put in a lot of thinking for this assignment, so PLEASE enjoy it. Or else….. And Hopefully Groom doesn’t change the stars on this… ;)
