Neighborhood Nature

Week 5: Visual Assignment 1

For my first visual assignment, I chose the Backyard Photo Safari assignment because I absolutely love taking photos of nature and I knew I was going home this weekend. At UMW, my backyard isn’t interesting at all (I live in the Eagle Landing apartments) as it is just a parking lot and some woods. My backyard at home isn’t very interesting either, as it’s covered by a large wooden deck. So instead of capturing my backyard, I decided to take a trip around the neighborhood on this nice, warm Saturday and capture some beautiful shots. My sister accompanied me on my walk along with my dog Paddington (who could lose a few pounds!).

Right in front of my house is a large wooden gazebo. I tried to capture a shot of it and include the suburban-style houses (which all look the same) in the backyard. During my walk, I used my iPhone 6 to capture flowers of bright colors, different bushes and plants around the park, as well as interesting shadows given off by the afternoon sun. I experimented taking pictures of objects at new and interesting angles so as to provide a new perspective. Above are the results of my photo safari. It wasn’t challenging finding photos to tell the story of my pleasant, bright neighborhood. And it was a nice opportunity to do appreciate some of the landscaping work done around the neighborhood as well.
