Open Your Ears

Week 4

A month of DS106.. This is a good thing. I should have baked a cake or something but this is special! I’ve learned so many different things. But let’s not get too sentimental because this was all about audio. Sound waves, not words. Which, if you’ve ever read my “about me” page, sound is amazing. Specifically with music because i LOVE music. For this weekly summary, i’m going to link a lot of my work because i was way more detailed in those posts. Here we go!

Daily Creates:

This was good. Last week we worked on a good amount of Daily Creates but this week, we only had 2! I thought this was very manageable since Audio is time consuming. I wanted to get these out of the way early in the week so I could focus on my audio assignments.

Monday

Monday’s Daily Create was all about the strangers and danger. I’m usually a shy person but this seemed fun. You find a stranger and ask for their picture. If you’re bold, you have an actual conversation with them. Here’s my separate blog post about it and below is my stranger who goes by the name of Amber!

Say Cheese & Nice To Meet You?

Tuesday:

Confusion is an appropriate description for this Daily Create. I was pretty confused because i wasn’t sure if i needed to make a video, watch a video, so a poem, or whatever! So i asked around and created a poem based off a Vimeo video. My blogpost about it is here. Watch the video then read the poem or vice versa!

Poem:

Confused and intrigued, the sound got me

Ladies appear from all directions

Dressed in black, class entails

Purples, blues, pinks, and reds cover my eyes

Memories of my childhood connect to my favorite kaleidoscope

Foreign words spring to my ears

Unfamiliar but familiar at the same time

Blue, White, and Red enter my mind

French, French, is that French?

Words flow in a cohesive matter

A little rap, a little pop, another unfamiliar style

2033, the future is coming.

Episodes 3-5!:

The Wire this week was great. There were a lot of interesting scenes between both the Dock boys and the Police. I did a very detailed summary of each episode we watched and i’ll link them below!

AWESOME BLOGPOST ABOUT THE EPISODES! CLICK HERE OR DIE!

The Magical Jen Ralston:

First thing i looked at when viewing this assignment was the time: 1:15hr? WHAT?!?! WHY SO LONG??! I was kind of dreading having to listen to it, i won’t lie. But then i actually listened to it. I’m not one to exaggerate but this blew my mind. I honestly did not realize how important Audio was. There are so many details that viewers don’t know about audio because they just don’t notice it. Sound plays a major role in almost everything, whether it’s a movie, a show or even a commercial. The goal this week was to open your ears to audio, but this interview opened my mind as well. Here’s my blogpost about it where i rave about Jen’s magical audio skills.

Brainstorming Up A Storm:

A Radio show. Brainstorming a 30 minute radio show isn’t as easy as one would think.. Imagine yourself speaking in front of people for 30 minutes. You speak faster than you think so.. 30 minutes?!!? What could i possibly discuss for 30 minutes. I’ll tell you what! Characters. Whenever i’m watching The Wire, i’m always intrigued by the characters. They change in so many different ways, it’s fun. I went into serious detail in my post called “Ideas About Ideas” so view it!

Tweeting For A Grade:

Yes, that title is correct. One of the final assignments i completed was live tweeting while listening to the audio of an episode. Since i was little  behind on the episodes, i did it on Thursday night which was episode 5. As i mentioned in my blogpost about it in more detail, i chose to watch the episode first so i know the basic story. So when i decide to listen to the audio, i can pay more attention with my ears rather than having to figure out what’s going on this. This helped a lot because after listening to Jen Ralston’s interview, i was more perceptive to the ques and so on. Overall, this was my favorite assignment because i really had to pay attention. It also helped that I got to tweet which i’ll include some screen shots or you can just go to my twitter and scroll through here! LONG LIVE #DS106RADIO

Audio Assignment Galore: My Journey To 7 Stars

Well, i did say this week was about audio, right? Audio assignments aren’t as intimidating as you would think, at least for me. I was scrolling through the wire hub and saw this one assignment being done repeatedly so i figured it must be good, yeah?

Assignment 1:

I wanted to start off confident with a simple assignment so I chose “Reverse Audio Quiz”. All i had to do was just pick a song, convert it, and then upload. Yay! Here’s my separate post about it and below is the actual audio. (2 stars)

Assignment 2:

If you didn’t catch all my tweets about this then you must live under a rock because my second audio assignment is my pride and joy. I was so excited and thrilled to show it off. I chose the “Great Hits Mashup” assignment where you pick 5 or more of an artists hits and mash them together. WORD. Sounds great, right? It was. I chose The Smiths because they’re one of my favorite bands, so why not? Groom obviously enjoyed it because he played it on the DS106Radio ;). Check out my very seriously detailed blogpost and listen to the audio below! (3 stars)

Assignment 3

I’m almost done! Assignment 3, here i come. I spent a lot of time scrolling through the audio assignment bank and stumbled upon this gem: “What’s The Story Morning Glory”  What i have to do is just record my morning routine. I think the most fun part of this assignment is going to be what people think the sounds are. The ears are so important with this because… well… you have to listen to the audio. You can stare at the donut picture all you want but it won’t tell you my morning routine! I think i picked the right assignment to end week 4 with. Here’s my separate blogpost about this assignment. Finally, for the actual audio: (2 stars)

Final Thoughts:

Week 4 was great. This first month of DS106 has given me the chance to work with various applications and actually understand how the internet works. Most of these skills will carry through other jobs and i’ll also be able to troll people so much harder now with song mash-ups and gifs. Either way, this week was good. Hopefully it prepared me for Week 7 for the radio show or else i’m going to cry. #ds4life
