Pandemic Right Here: The Wire Season 4, Episode 1

Snoop

I’m really digging Snoop thus far. I’m very intrigued as to her story. She’s the kind of character that I’d love to see pop up in Orange Is the New Black.

Screen Shot 2014-11-04 at 7.23.32 PM

I love all the colors in the background.

Screen Shot 2014-11-04 at 8.16.23 PM

She looks like a spider, a black widow luring in an unsuspecting male to his fate. And I like that she lures him in in way that doesn’t use her sex appeal.

Carcetti

Tommy has really been acting like a child in this episode. He knows he’s losing, but he can’t be mature about it and keep fighting and working until the end. Just listening to the way he talks in this episode, he seems like some unruly teenager. The kids on the street seem more mature than him.

Screen Shot 2014-11-04 at 7.50.59 PM

Overhead shot making him look small and weak.

Screen Shot 2014-11-04 at 7.51.41 PM

Another overhead shot to show how powerless he looks. His position on the floor also makes him look really immature.

Screen Shot 2014-11-04 at 7.51.49 PM

He looks like a teenage boy who’s been sent to his room.

Screen Shot 2014-11-04 at 7.51.57 PM

More tomfoolery. I like the donkey on his desk. Subtle hint to his political party.

Screen Shot 2014-11-04 at 7.52.01 PM

More teenageryness.

Screen Shot 2014-11-04 at 7.53.03 PM

Another overhead shot making him look weak.

Screen Shot 2014-11-04 at 7.53.42 PM

He looks like a kid in high school doodling instead of doing his work.

Screen Shot 2014-11-04 at 8.21.34 PM

I like the red, yellow, and blue lights in the background. There’s a lot of red, yellow, and blue surrounding Carcetti in this episode.

Prez

I am so happy to see that this is how Prez is brought back. Like, oh man, I hope some Dead Poet’s Society stuff goes down.

Screen Shot 2014-11-04 at 8.06.26 PM

Screen Shot 2014-11-04 at 8.13.41 PM

The desks remind me a lot of the streets and all the furniture that we see everywhere.

Herc

Screen Shot 2014-11-04 at 7.38.17 PM

Herc’s got a new job and I’m interested to see how it plays into the plot line.

McNulty

Screen Shot 2014-11-04 at 7.45.58 PM

McNulty seems to be happy where he is, but it seems like a forced happiness, as he’s finally living the life his ex-wife wanted him to live and he’s finally able to be a dad and have a solid relationship, but in a way, that doesn’t really seem like that’s what McNulty needs to end up doing. And it seems like Daniels and Bunk as well as other officers know that McNulty is just trying to play a role that he’s not made for.

The Detail

Screen Shot 2014-11-04 at 7.28.51 PM

Typical season premiere shot of the bulletin board.

Screen Shot 2014-11-04 at 7.31.36 PM

New Lieutenant. Should be interesting to see how he affects things.

The Drug Dealers

Screen Shot 2014-11-04 at 7.32.44 PM

Looks like Bodie’s struggling to get work and Marlo isn’t helping much.

Screen Shot 2014-11-04 at 7.40.55 PM

This sneaky murder is some Dexter type stuff. I love it. Also, I love how the nail gun figures into this.

Screen Shot 2014-11-04 at 7.52.48 PM

This is a good use of thirds. I like how the bodies are perpendicular to each other.

Interesting Shots

Screen Shot 2014-11-04 at 7.25.38 PM

This is basically knock-off Home Depot. Same font and colors.

Screen Shot 2014-11-04 at 7.37.03 PM

I love how they all look the same in this shot.

Screen Shot 2014-11-04 at 7.37.11 PM

You can just feel how tired and old everything is in this space.

Screen Shot 2014-11-04 at 7.41.59 PM

Great wide shot. The pigeons are really interesting. They keep appearing over the seasons. I’m especially interesting to see what Marlo’s deal is with the pigeons.

Screen Shot 2014-11-04 at 7.42.50 PM

Clothes say so much. You can tell Dookie doesn’t fit in because he’s dressed so differently from everyone else.

Screen Shot 2014-11-04 at 7.57.23 PM

The pigeons again. I love their crazy little set-ups.

Screen Shot 2014-11-04 at 8.02.53 PM

Great shot looking up at the kids, but they still seem really small and overwhelmed by the buildings.

Screen Shot 2014-11-04 at 8.03.42 PM

Another great shot. I love all the junk in the way and the drug dealers in the background. The way it’s staged is so visually interesting.

Screen Shot 2014-11-04 at 8.03.45 PM

The other side of the alley. I love this conflict between the drug dealers and the residents and the way it is manifested visually.

Screen Shot 2014-11-04 at 8.04.51 PM

Great shot of these kids. Low angle makes them look powerful.

Screen Shot 2014-11-04 at 8.04.59 PM

I love how the kids in black shirts are all clumped together while the kids with the water balloons are spread out. I also like the positioning of the shot.

Screen Shot 2014-11-04 at 8.05.54 PM

Great way of showing the disinterest of the teachers.

Screen Shot 2014-11-04 at 8.06.48 PM

Another nod to post 9/11. I like how it is paired with the scene at the school talking about the pencil sharpeners being a dangers spot, a “soft target” in some ways.

Screen Shot 2014-11-04 at 8.09.18 PM

Another great wide shot. I love the couches stacked on the left side. The furniture stacking feels like an art form at this point.

Screen Shot 2014-11-04 at 8.13.30 PM

Here we see similar amounts of furniture stacking in the school hallway like we see in the streets.

Screen Shot 2014-11-04 at 8.22.09 PM

Such a powerful albeit minimalist shot. I love the police car driving by as this kid is thinking about his role in someone getting murdered.
