This episode seemed to do a lot with power relations and how those characters who’ve been consistently undermined, controlled, and laughed at fight back. There was a lot of sudden, unexpected violence.
Bodie & the Streets
While Bodie was not the one who acted, I did notice how the camera angles changed depending on if Stringer was present or not. Bodie looks tall in shots and scenes where Stringer isn’t around, but once Stringer appears, you see that Bodie isn’t that big after all.
The violence was brought to the streets by a very unsuspecting villain. He seems to be very similar to Stringer in that he looks clean and professional, but he’s actually doing a lot of damage.
Prez
Prez once again messed up and punched Valchek. Of course, this is an unfair world, so Prez will probably be even worse off now than he was before. I feel really bad for him, as he is just one of the many examples of people being forced to follow in their family’s footsteps, even if that’s not the path they want to take.
Ziggy
Ziggy’s scene was probably the most insane one of the episode. Watching him snap like that was very scary and it makes me wonder if he’ll get out on an insanity plea. The shots surrounding this moment also really built up a sense that he was not in his right mind when he did this. Likewise, his guilt afterward and the emotional turmoil he experienced afterward was very different than those of other characters who’ve killed.
Familial Responsibility
These seems to be a new theme that’s appearing as we see that Kima’s going to be a mother and Ziggy’s actions were beyond Frank or Nick’s control.
“Why weren’t you there?! You’re his cousin!”
“You’re his father.”
That moment between Nick and Frank really showed how their dynamic had affected Ziggy and led to him acting independently.
Red, Blue, & Yellow
White
I’ve noticed there’s been a lot of predominantly minimalist or white-colored shots that have very violent or evil undertones to them.
Kima’s gun on the kitchen counter
The Greek is always dressed in a very unassuming way. The art museum and the silence surrounding it seemed very fitting, but also eerie.
Washing the drugs down the drain
The Laundry Room
For some reason, the way the walls are painted and built, it looks like the inside of one of the containers on the docks.
