User Beware!

Web 2.0 Storytelling gave another perspective in which to look at all the social media networking that we have access to; platforms used as a mode to communicate with others. I had not thought of looking at these networks as a manner of storytelling. With a closer look at what Bryan Alexander conveys in this chapter of his novel The New Digital Storytelling I have taken a different look at these platforms as more than just ways of expressing ourselves.
Before I looked at Blogs as just ways of providing information to the public not so much as a diary. Of course this is a more creative way of looking at what we put out on the internet, but then again one would need to have the participation of others.

Talky Tina gave me a firsthand experience of this just this week while doing an assignment bank activity. With thinking I was only fulfilling a task I was pulled into Talky Tina’s trance. It is shown to me how a simple post on my blog could take on a life of storytelling of its own. Without my permission, of course none needed; my acting in jester placing Talky Tina’s head on a chimp, thinking I’d minimize what some may feel as a threatening presence of Talky Tina is monopolized upon. Talky Tina stayed in character expressing the hurtful feelings she felt in my adding her head to a monkey and therefore reminiscent of her past. Talky Tina created an entire storyline from a simple FaceinHole assignment I blogged. A clear example of how a story can take on a life of its own.

I too believe that pictures speak volumes when conveying a thought, mood, or simply to persuade. So as Mr. Alexander explains social images can indeed tell a complete story. In addition I can now see Facebook for something other than friends amongst friends and / or family expressing statuses. In truth if you look throughout one’s history on Facebook there are tales of many tales! Only thing is the users themselves don’t see the art capable of being created when utilizing these forums. In general I take away from this reading the importance of utilizing social media responsibly at all times because though it may not be intended to tell a story in short it does. What story one wants told is to be considered when using Twitter, Facebook, Blogs, Instagram, Snapchat, and all others due to show up on the internet!
