Week 3 Winding Down

Reflection on “Web 2.0 Storytelling” and “Shapes of Stories”

Bryan Alexander’s chapter on Web 2.0 Storytelling brought to light something I never knew blogging and other social media was used for. The Internet tends to become overloaded with news about the world, politics, celebrities, and more. It’s refreshing to see that people have used digital tools to engage in a type of online fictional storytelling, rather than just commenting on news and or posting about their day. See my full reflection on “Web 2.0 Storytelling” here.

“Shapes of Stories” by Kurt Vonnegut was a fun little video to watch. It made me understand that there are so many ways to tell a story visually.

Daily Creates

For me, when a new week of DS106 starts I get excited to complete my Daily Create assignments. The assignments are never overly academic, and are designed to engage your mind and creativity. Because I am starting to form a long-lasting bond with Daily Create assignments, I finished my Daily Create’s a little earlier in the week. Below are the links to my three Daily Create posts.

September 8, 2014And the light at the end of the tunnel, is the light of an oncoming train.
September 10, 2014Make a Flickr Lune Poem of an Ordinary Act
September 11, 2014Your favorite mathematical expression, using found numbers and symbols.

Creative Assignments

I chose my three creative assignments by browsing the DS106 Assignment Bank, and selecting those that interested me the most. The assignments allowed me to think more creatively about The Wire–the characters, things that are prevalent in the series, and more. Below are links to each of my creative assignments.

Assignment #1 (Design) – What ever happened to Stringer Bell?
Assignment #2 (Web) – Capturing the Essence of D’Angelo Barksdale
Assignment #3 (Visual) – World of Wires

Organizing Blooming Mandala

After reading about how we should structure the menu bars on our blogs, I panicked a little. How would I go about adding all of these categories and ensuring that it will take my website’s visitors to the right place? I sat down a thought a little about how blog posts are categorized. I figured out that you can create more categories as well as subcategories, and add links to all of them in the menu bar. About 30 minutes into playing with the organization of my menu bar, I found an arrangement that functioned perfectly and included a link to my assignments for DGST101.

Talking DS106

Commenting
– I thought Jessica’s animal montage was adorable and well made. Loved the chocolate brown pup in the end! Made me think about how much I miss my dog.
– Carmela’s photo choice for her Lune poem makes pearls look so delicate!
– Carmela’s execution of the celebrity head swap was hilarious.
– Didn’t even realize Jessica’s Daily Create response was about one of my favorite cartoons as a kid!
– Imran showed some different faces of Daniels.
– I liked how Imran compared the qualities of Wallace to that of a different character played by the same actor in Friday Night Lights in his assignment.
– Jessica’s PB&B Lune poem gave me a good laugh. I used to always have that problem eating sandwiches.

Twitter
Below are some of the conversations I had with other DS106ers on Twitter. I realized that I post updates on my blog and assignments regularly on Twitter and reply to those who comment on my Tweets, but I don’t comment on other user’s tweets as much. This week I had a funny Twitter discussion with Jessica, Carmela, and Brittany about McNulty’s style choices, and got some feedback from Brittany about my D’Angelo Barksdale Pinterest Board. Looking at the interactions I’ve had on Twitter this week tells me that I definitely need to step up my Twitter game. Look out for a storm of tweets from me next week!
