Week 6: Design and Intention

On Friday’s video discussion about The Wire, we were asked an intriguing question: What separates the visual element from the element of design? And to me, the difference lies in intention. When looking into inspiration for my visual assignments, I could rely on anything that caught my eye. Natural color, form, and general aesthetic appeal were all fair game. However when it comes to design, most features have an intention behind them; or as Vignelli puts it, semantics (you can read my thoughts on The Vignelli Canon here). Even the simplest designs seems to have a message behind it. There’s a reason why it’s minimalistic, why it has its chosen geometry, why its balanced in a particular arrangement. While the pretty reflective colors of my pool surface are a visual element, the choice of tiles and the shape of the pool that accentuates this comes down to design. So this week, I decided to share my own design creations in the form of assignments:

Along with a new design assignment I submitted this week, App Icon. I also had 3 daily creates for the week:

I also had the privilege to join John Meadows, Jim Groom, and Paul Bond this Friday for a live discussion of episode 12 of season 2 of The Wire. What a powerful episode! We were able to talk about our impressions of the various design elements of the episode. I had to go ahead and finish the season, that ending was way too compelling.

And that wraps up our week on design! This week was a lot of work, especially on the assignment side. But at the same time, I almost feel like some of these are my highest quality work yet. To end everything off, here are various blogs I left comments on for the week:
