Week ending 10/12/2014: Focusing on Audio

This week we focused back on audio.  Audio seems to be harder for me than working with images.  It seems more personal listening to someone’s voice rather than just looking at a picture.  We are building up and getting ready for our radio show.  A radio show makes me really nervous. 20-30 minutes of just us filling dead air space… yikes.  We can do it though.

We had 2 daily creates to complete this week.  My first daily create this week was the “Evil Guinea Pigs” assignment.  This made me laugh.  Guinea pigs are so cute and fluffy that it makes it funny to think of them as evil.  I made mine the true crime lord leader that The Greek answers to.

Evil Guinea Pig

The second daily create that I did was the writing create on “Don’t describe The Wire”.  This was fun to think of facts from The Wire that are true but if that is the only information given would completely confuse the reader.  Here is my post done directly on ds106’s website:

As for my 10 stars this week.  I managed to get 10 1/2.  I did the following assignments:

This poem was written in Microsoft Word and then I recited the track directly into Soundcloud.  My poem was written to talk about the game.  The characters that we watch in each episode are all players in a the game of life.  This game they play is separated by a thin wire.  One side is good and one side is evil.  Very few players stay on one side permanently.  Most wonder occasionally from side to side.  This game they play cannot be won.  There are no winners.

My next assignment was All Me in The Scene.  In this audio assignment, I am to reenact a scene in which I play all the characters parts.  I wanted to use an episode from The Wire, so I decided that I would use the episode in which Frank and Nick have a discussion overlooking the port.  This scene is from Season 2 episode 4 called “Hard Cases”.

My next audio assignment was “Spooky Sounds”.  This was a really fun assignment.  My son James even volunteered to make the insane killer laughing track for me.  He was so excited that he wants me to upload his laugh to Freesound.org.  :)  Enjoy the scare…

The last audio assignment that I did this week was to imitate some weather.  This was a cool assignment.  I used Audacity to make my own sounds to imitate the beginning of a thunderstorm.  I made the wind myself, the rain was my fingertips on a Diet Pepsi can, and I also did my own lightning strikes.

I also enjoyed listening to the DS106 radio show of Episode 12 from season 2 on The Wire.  I learned so much in the comments like how to tell a story without really “telling” a story.  The confession given by Nick provided so much information to everyone including the audience.  I also found it interesting how so many authentic locations and sounds were used in this episode.

All and all, another productive week from the roof.  Until next time…
