First week in ds106!

For our first assignments this week I was actually forced to think about technology and work on social media. Twitter and Facebook were the extent of my technological reach; needless to say, I definitely struggled a bit this week. I did manage to get myself on all the different media outlets in the end and actually put something out on the Internet through each one. Here they are!

It was actually cool to figure out the use of each of these social media outlets and to learn how to distribute my information on them. I have never been technologically savvy, so it is nice to take a class where I am forced to work through my difficulty.

Binge watching the Wire was a much easier and more interesting task for me. I enjoyed the honesty of the show and the discussions on each episode made me dive into the nuances. I was able to use my English major tendency to analyze while watching the show, while also paying more attention to an unfamiliar crime show and the direction of the actual show itself.

The juxtaposition of the crime fighter life with the crime life was really interesting to watch, as well as the parallel between the drug war and home life. You get to see each character in the role they play in the drug crime warfare and at the home, such as McNulty in the field and with his sons, or when Stringer is seen at school. These things turn the idea of good and bad on its head, and makes the real world, a world where everyone has different reasons for being driven to certain measures, more understandable.

This week opened my eyes to a new show and new technology and Iā€™m hoping that I can continue to learn new skills for how to actually use this technology.
