Thoughts on The Vignelli Canon

This was a pretty interesting read. It discussed everything that goes into designing. When I was taking my pictures this morning, I was thinking about many of these aspects without knowing it. I really enjoyed the first the first section about semantics. When I think of semantics, I usually think about the meaning of words. Vignelli writes about semantics being the meaning behind a design. It gives me a whole other meaning to the word. In fact there were a lot of things Vignelli wrote about that you have to keep in mind while writing. I though that was really cool. I also enjoyed reading this because of the way it is set up. The reading at times was difficult to understand, but the pictures helped me comprehend.

Part two of the reading was really captivating. It was really eye opening to the designing of books and pamphlets and such. When I am reading books, especially text books, I’m constantly wondering why there were so many blank space and sometimes pages. It drives me crazy!!! I guess this book explains that it makes the page look more serene, but I still think it’s a waste of space :)

I think the collection of experiences section was my favorite. Vignelli talks about how design requires the use of all senses. It was a cool thing to think about because it really does. When I stop to think about how something looks, I use all of my senses to decide if I like it or not. I also use my senses when I remember designed things. Lastly, I want to point out that it’s not mandatory for everyone to have the same tastes. While Vignelli had some very convincing points, there are some things I did not agree with him on–like the white space. It is just like when you look at a painting or sculpture. You may think it is the most beautiful thing in the world and I may think it’s terrible. I think that’s what I like most about design. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and it’s what makes design so interesting!
