Week 1 Summary

Setting Up

So, as we all know, this week was about setting up and getting ready for the adventure that is DS106. Who knew this would be such work, considering we all use the common social media sites? It all started with actually creating the blog on WordPress. The installation of the site was probably the easiest. I run a music blog on Tumblr so I was completely thrown off by WordPress, but I do enjoy using my own domain, so that’s a plus. I picked the most uninteresting domain name: c-mitchell21.com. I figured that it was professional enough! Anyways, I guess I had more fun naming my blog, which i explained in my introduction post. This was only step 1.

So Many Accounts

Step two was creating and personalizing the various social media accounts: Twitter, Flickr, Soundcloud, and Youtube/Google. This was my favorite part because I already had most of these accounts (not Flickr) so i knew how to create separate ones just for DS106. Flickr was the most interesting because i’ve never used it before. So now I also have a yahoo account, which can’t be too bad, right? With all these new accounts, what am I supposed to do?!? Well, I embed them all into one introduction post. I first did a post for each account, which I later deleted and just added them into one giant post. Okay, okay, this was all a decent amount of work, but i’m still not done! Here’s a small screenshot of my introduction post.

Introduction

The Wire

The last part of week 1 was dedicated to The Wire. I made the mistake of binge watching (like I do with all programs) so my memory of each episode is lacking. I might have to refresh my memory. What I DO know is that the show is great. The one thing I couldn’t get my mind off of during the first episode is, “how does this relate to DS106?”, but later as I continued to watch more episodes, I understood. I wish i knew before how much you need to pay attention when you watch. So basically what I got from the 9 Episodes (other than the enjoyment of getting to watch McNulty) is that everyone leaves and trail and cracking codes is vital.

Episode 1: People Are Not Who You Think They Are

To me, that is the best title for this episode. What comes to mind in this episode is Officer McNulty walking in on the trial and him giving Stringer Bell that weird look. My impression of Stringer Bell was that he was an attorney part of the team defending D’Angelo mostly because the way he was dressed. He looked professional and also, why would he write that note to McNulty if he wasn’t rooting for D’Angelo? I know most of this sounds silly but cut me some slack, it was only the first episode.

Reaction To Discussions:

Honestly, if there were no discussion videos, I would have probably missed half of the main points of the show. I’m really going to hone in on the first episode because that video discussion really helped me. I loved how it was stated that the murders were on index cards. I had to watch the little clip to see it again because it went over my head when I watched the episode. McNulty really does want to “real” police work. Although Rawls believes that as long as they have been solved, then they’re good, McNulty goes the other way. He sees the truth and wants to be a “real” policeman and crack these guys. I believe that McNulty is a good officer and even if they are trying to take his badge, he’s still good.

*DISCLAIMER* Yes, I did watch all 9 episodes. I felt that episode 1 would be a good one to talk about since it was an introduction to the show, just like this weeks assignment has been an introduction to DS106
