Photoblitz!!!!!

What’s up ds106? So this photoblitz assignment was something I was really excited about this week. I had a friend with a nicer camera come over and help me with the photos, and I have to say, I’m pretty happy with the results! Let’s get started!

And so it begins…

“Make a photo of an outdoor scene free of any human artifacts”

This one was tricky on UMW’s campus.  There were lots of scenic views but it was very hard to find a landscape completely void of all human influence.  Caution: While this might look nice and beautiful, it is that nasty, smelly septic drainage pond next to Jepson.

“Make a picture of an interesting vertical, horizontal or diagonal line.”

This was an easy one.  This is an image of my research lab.  My project for the past two years has been to study slow light.  What we see here is a portion of the optics table that my research partner and I use to do this.  I really liked the variety of straight lines in this shot.  The screw holes in the table, the mirror posts, and the straight line that they are in all come together very nicely I think.

“Find your favorite number.”

This one was pretty easy as well.  Anybody who knows me pretty well knows I have a slightly unhealthy obsession with the number 28.  My birthday is January 28th, and I just kinda see and notice the number 28 everywhere.  When I saw this on the list, I immediately knew I would take this picture.  This is the list of offices in Jepson Hall.

“Illustrate attraction in a photo today.”

This one is a bit of a stretch, but I think it works.  As we were going back into Jepson, we noticed these bikes parked outside, and they looked like a couple’s bikes.

“A photo where some or all of your subject isn’t in focus.”

IMG_6948 This one was just goofing off in front of Jepson.  That’s me out of focus…

“Represent or express something loud.”

I think this one is pretty self explanatory to anyone who has been through a UMW fire drill.

“A subject that is isolated against a bright background”

Again, this one was a bit of a stretch.  I was running out of time and ideas, so I just propped a pair of wire strippers against a solid colored bright green background.  Done and done.

All in all, I am pretty happy with the way the project turned out.  And a big thank you to Mimi Huygen for the use of her camera and help with some of the ideas!
