10 Times the Trouble

Week ten crushed me! With a daughter graduating from Great Lakes boot camp the same week, it was impossible to work ahead in completing audio even while working ahead. In part, this was because I had no idea of the amount of tutorial I would need in just navigating the software necessary to complete the tasks. In addition, with preparing for the drive I would have to take to Illinois and the time I would lose within our time frame taking that drive, I was SOL that Monday.

The only task that I managed to get done prior to leaving were watching of the episodes and the readings!

Ken Burns

Ken Burns offers his narrative of what great stories are made of. He emphasizes that genuine stories are about the whole parts being greater than the sum; that being the equivalent of three. What was interesting to me was when he explained that a great story is one which contradicts the image of the story through words and actions. This rang true for me because I prefer a film that invests in my time that I afford watching it; time that I can never get back. I want a film to leave me pondering my thoughts, challenging my intellect and conscience.

Ken views stories as manipulation, the ability to complicate things to draw interests. He explains that we tell stories to continue our own true selves. To remind us that as human we will not always be here and that is Okay.

Look, Listen, Analyze, and Ebert

Roger Ebert’s “How to Read a Movie” article definitely put viewing the episodes this week into context for me with reading into foreshadowing, themes, and symbolism. According to Ebert with reading film one should familiarize themselves with the director and the films context prior to analyzing the piece. He suggests stopping film periodically to think about the image a method later referred to as ‘Cinema Interruptus’. What was most significant was understanding that all viewers can learn from film reading discussions because of the individual personal experiences that all involved offer to the process.

Inspires

This week of work proved difficult with meeting the bare minimum of completing the assignments alone. The most upsetting thing to me was the lack of leisure time and inability to look through my fellow Ds’ers creations for inspiration, though I could have used it!
