A Family Divided: The Wire Season 2, Episode 11 Analysis

This episode reminded me a lot of episode 11 from season 1, as we also saw the raids and press coverage in that episode.

Valchek waited until there was press coverage to bring Frank out, which really speaks volumes to his motives as well as a lot of the motives behind many of the police officers in this series.

I thought it was really interesting that the previous episode ended with watching the drugs being washed down the drain and one of the scenes at the beginning of the episode was of Kima scraping the remains from around the drain.

There was something about the way they stuck the push-pin in his neck that really cemented that he was deceased.

Ziggy in jail was a really interesting sight to see, especially his interactions with his dad. Clearly you could see that the neglect from both parents had a great effect on him. Also, when Ziggy said that he was tired of being the punchline, it really was a strong remark to make. You could tell why he snapped. I know a lot of viewers find him annoying, but there’s a part of me that feels bad for him and for the circumstances that led him to do the things he did. I don’t think that what he did was right, but I don’t think that this was something innate in him. He is a product of his environment.

There’s something about how dark and coal-like his eyes look in this scene that really speaks to the dark place he’s gone.

Frank seemed to do a lot of staring in this episode. He’s done a lot of staring throughout this whole season. I think watching Ziggy disappear into the crowd of criminals is yet another unhappy change for Frank. Much like watching the docks change over the years, he’s seeing his son suddenly be a very different person and be stuck in a very different circumstance.

I really loved this shot for how bright the colors were. The rest of the episode was very muted and in darker, warmer colors. This is very bright and lively, which is very interesting since the docks are a dying thing.

I love how warm the lighting is in this scene. It’s very dark and rich, which you don’t really appreciate in the moment because things happen so quickly.

There were some very wide shots at the end of the episode. This shot we see red, yellow, and blue color palette. There’s something about this moment how you can see how similar yet different Nick and Frank have become. This is the first time we see Frank tell Nick that he doesn’t want Nick to tag along.

The background seems almost photoshopped in here.

Here is another staring scene with Frank. I like how he’s leaning against a chain link fence as he comes to realize that there is no good response or choice to make. He’s trapped. The police or the Greeks. There is no good option.

Here we have another wide shot. It shows that there’s tension building between these two groups of people as they are no longer huddled together at a booth in a diner but opposing each other on a long, desolate stretch of road. I really love the looming infrastructure overhead.
