This post is “DESIGNED” to attract…pun intended.

Hello again ds106-masses!  Another week gone, and that means: Another Weekly Summary!!!!

This was a busy week for ds106-ers: a designblitz, 15 stars of assignments, 3 daily creates, and reading various resource materials.  So when I list it all out, it really doesn’t sound that bad.  Well, let’s get into it!

DesignBlitz:

A delicious Harpoon beer

So for this photo, I was drinking a Harpoon Celtic Red this weekend, and noticed the almost perfect symmetry of its label.  When I really started studying the label, though, I noticed several key design elements.  First, the line that creates a sort of “line of symmetry” is actually a harpoon, which is the name of the beer.  Second, the type of beer is a Celtic Red, and the label designer decided to use the color red sparingly, but in contrast to the rest of the label, it really “pops”.

Jepson Hall

For the above photo, I decided to take a photo of the building that I am in every day, Jepson Science Center.  I think this building exemplifies several key elements of design.  First, balance: there are three columns on either side of the front door, a fountain that spans the entire length of the front entrance, and a cherry tree on either side of the entrance.  The front is very balanced and symmetric, with the front doors being the line of symmetry.  Second, this exhibits function.  The columns seem to frame the front door, and even from a distance you can tell where you are supposed to enter the building at.

The red phone...

This phone is right inside the front door of Jepson.  I took a photo of this because of the designed use of color: It is an emergency phone, and needs to be noticed from possibly across the room in case of an emergency.  The poor part of this design, however, is the fact that this phone is in a little alcove completely hidden from the main portion of the foyer.  So 1-for-2 I guess…

X-Ray Radiation! Caution!!!!!

What drew my attention to this for the designblitz was the use of symbolism.  Without even knowing anything about what goes on behind this door, merely by the use of symbolism and a few words, a person knows to stay away from here unless they take the proper precautions.  The symbol for radiation is just a culturally accepted symbol: by itself, it shouldn’t mean anything.  But in this context, you know to stay away!  This exhibits the symbolism aspect of design.

Assignments:

My first assignment this week was a survey that I created for the “Participate and Create a Survey” assignment.  I made a survey via surveymonkey. My assignment post goes into much more detail.  If I get some responses to the survey, I’ll post the results next week.

Stars: 3, Wire related

Next up, I did the Bumper Sticker assignment.  Again, I explain a little more about the creative process in my blog post for the assignment, but here is the finished product.

Next, I did the “Create a Read Poster” assignment.  You can read my blog post about it here, but the finished poster is below.

Gotta love Stringer.  Always so calm and cool…always seems to be in charge.

Stars: 3.5, Wire related

Next, I decided to create an assignment.  I had created one for the first week we had to do assignments, so with this weeks creation, that finishes out my two required creations.  NICE!  Anyway, I decided to create the assignment “Create Your Own Magic Cards“.  I explain in detail my reasoning behind developing this assignment in my blog post, but I’ll post the resulting cards below.

Avon Brother Mouzone Burrell jimmy-mcnulty OmarMagic

I really like the way these way these turned out.

Stars: 4, Wire related

Finally, I completed the assignment “Take a Picture of Something Interesting” just to round out the 15 stars.  I decided to take a picture of the electronics setup in my research laboratory.  It is a hot mess, but it is my hot mess.  I know where things go and how they work.  Here is my blog post on the assignment, but the picture below says enough.

This was on Ien’s post Wire 106 Epigraph

One thing to note here: I have no idea why this says I commented at 3:00am on the 6th.  It is 11:02 pm on the 5th as I type this, and as I have an 8:00 am class, I seriously doubt I will be anywhere but my bed at 3:00 am.

This one was on Jess Reingold’s blog post “Glass Board Tracing!

Seemed like a nice, simple way to do a self tracing on a grand scale.

This one was on Ien’s Designing A Custom Banner assignment.  Again, quality work from Ien.

There were a few other comments, but they haven’t been acknowledged yet so I don’t have a screen shot of them.

Additionally, I participated in the Video Discussion on Friday regarding season 2, episode 11.  The video of that can be found here.

That’s all for now ds106!  Catch you next week!
