Week 1 Summary

And so we come to the end of the first week of ds106, and the beginning of many more. Over the course of the week I created some new social media accounts, included below for convenience:

Some links can also be accessed via the icons on the top of the blog. I had to use the youtube icon in lieu of Vimeo unfortunately. I also made introductions, which can be found embedded all nice and tidy in one page. My favorite to make was the soundcloud intro, though I’m afraid I might have gotten a bit carried away.

This week also marks my introduction to the HBO show, The Wire. Now I’ve heard about this show a lot, often in the same old manner (“This is the best thing to come on TV since The Wire!”), and this sort of praise usually over-hypes things for me. As a result, I unfortunately become a bit reluctant, as not to have my expectations squandered. But boy did this show deliver! I am reminded of the drama of The Sopranos, the intrigue of Game of Thrones (both also HBO programs), and the cinematography of Twin Peaks. I am definitely looking forward to future episodes, though if I had one complaint, it’s that nine episodes in one week was a bit too rushed for my schedule. But I am glad the pacing will be slowed down in further weeks.

One of my favorite scenes was the desk moving scene in the beginning of episodes four, which actually encouraged me to search online for a more detailed analysis. Because of this, I found this excellent and cool insight by Peter Honig. Very few shows inspire me to look up outside analysis, so another point to the talented writers and artists of the show.

All in all this week was fairly straightforward and simple. The hardest part for me was customizing my blog to be a bit more representative of me, while still looking good and maintaining its function. I hope to fine tune it more over time as the course progresses. Future plans also include of (hopefully) the inclusion of some personal thoughts and posts that are not directly related to school assignments. I have this blog, I might as well use it for my own purposes!

Until then, here’s to week 2!
