……. I have finally finished the first 9 episodes of The Wire. Although I’m quickly realizing that the work for ds106 will be time consuming, I would have to say I am pretty privileged to be watching TV for homework. As an avid Netflix watcher, I tend to binge on shows and I’m always looking for something new to watch. And while I’ll have to put Scrubs on hold for a bit, I am happy it is for The Wire. I love getting sucked into a show and its characters. Being a fan of crime and police shows like CSI, SVU, Dexter and Criminal Minds, The Wire was easy to get into and now I’m hooked. Although it falls under the category as another cop show, it is different from the rest in that it is an ongoing story and not a different crime every episode and I feel like it really portrays life in Baltimore. I wondered what The Wire was going to have to do with ds106. I watched the show before reading the discussions and I realized how much I had missed because I was not thinking to pay attention to details such as colors, frames, shadows and sounds and how they all tell a story within each frame. One scene that stood out to me was in episode 3 when D’Angelo was explaining the chess game to Wallace and Bodie. It shows the positions of power within their group and that everyone knows their place and who is in charge and who makes the big moves like the King and Queen (Avon and Stringer). And although they never say it, the two know that they are pawns. It also cracked my up that Bodie referred to pawns as “bald-headed bitches.” I really liked that scene and how it represented this metaphor for how the didn’t understand “the game” because they were originally playing checkers with the chess pieces. I look forward to continuing watching The Wire and I plan on watching the discussions after each episode so I can catch on to these messages within the scene. I have posted the links to all of my social media accounts under the blog section of my page at the top.
