Response to Vignelli

Upon reading and looking at The Vignelli Canon, I see that a lot of his ideas and principles are still relevant today despite modern technology’s influence on the ease of design. He seems to put a lot of emphasis on thought and planning the creation. It’s not just about how it’s going to look, but what this product is, what it means, and how you’re trying to convey that through design. Likewise, the execution of the design isn’t something that can be accomplished quickly, as it requires patience and thought as well as a focus on the details.

I really like the emphasis that he puts on time and understanding as they are often looked over in today’s world when most people expect things to be received immediately. This importance of really setting aside time to focus, research, explore, and understand the product and the design you are creating around it is really nice. Of course, that seems really difficult in a class like this at times where we’ve got a lot of assignments due and we’ve only got a week to spend on it. Still, if that process can be internalized and made proportional to the assignment, then I think anything can be well designed.

I also enjoyed his discussion of fonts, sizing, and layouts as it reminded me of being on my high school yearbook staff and page layouts and the different issues we had to work around. It also reminded me of material I’ve read for Intro to Digital Studies when we were getting into website design. Every chance I get to learn more about design techniques, the more I analyze the world around me and understand how the world is being delivered to me.
