The Light That Was Closing In

A group of my friends and I decided to take a trip out to an abandoned sanitarium. The main entrance to is blocked off and patrolled by the local park rangers. The only way to get to it is about a 1/2 mile walk on train tracks. We started out journey along the tracks until we reached the final stretch. It’s a dark long tunnel. Walking into the tunnel we started yelling to hear the echo. After a few minutes I started to feel something on the tracks. Under my feet the rails started to shake. Intensifying every second. Next thing I know I hear the train horn as loud as ever before. I look up and see the light coming. We all started to panic and turn to get out of the tunnel as fast as we could. We were running as fast as we could. It felt like the train was right on our heels. The conductor released the horn telling us to get out of the way. One of the girls in the group lost a flip flop on the tracks. She turned for a split second thinking about grabbing the shoe but we yelled to keep running. I didn’t think we were going to make it until I saw the entrance. “Just a little farther” I thought to myself. We get out of the tunnel and immediately make a sharp left turn. There was a hill bordering the tracks so we pushed everyone up as far as possible. I was at the bottom with another guy and we laid flat on the hill. Within a second of getting out of the tunnel the train passed us and the wind was so intense but at the same time I had a huge adrenaline rush. After a couple of minutes the train was fully passed. We all took a deep breath and then said how scary that was but was also an experience like no other. Let’s just say there was no chance of me taking a picture like the one Kevin Price tweeted.

This is the tunnel that we had to walk through. You are able to see the end of the tunnel but we would always go at night to make the experience of walking around the sanitarium a little more scary. The second picture shows the hill on each side that we climbed up to get away from the tracks. The last picture is of the actual sanitarium just to give you an idea of what it looked like.
